As a general rule, and subject to the first sentence in 2 above, the Department examines the effect achieved by a particular set of changes, rather than the method adopted to accomplish it. In the latter case a disposition necessarily takes place, while in the former case the significance of the change is the determining factor.ģ. For example, a change in a right attaching to a security can be effected by an amendment to its original terms or by the cancellation of the original security and its replacement by another security identical in all respects except that the changed right is now incorporated. By virtue of clause 54(c)(ii)(A), any transaction or event that involves the redemption in whole or in part or the cancellation of a security necessarily results in its disposition in the hands of the holder, even though the result achieved could have been accomplished by a change in terms. Additionally, if such a holder fails to recognize a disposition in a situation described in this bulletin and the Department does not assess or reassess to give effect to the disposition within the statutory time limit, the tax consequences of a disposition occurring subsequent to the expiration of this time will be computed as though the prior disposition had not taken place.Ģ. However, the Department will not require that a disposition be reported by a holder of an altered security if there are no resultant tax consequences. The purpose of this bulletin is to discuss the factors that the Department considers in determining whether or not a disposition has taken place in such circumstances. Alterations made in the rights, preferences, terms, conditions, restrictions or limitations attaching to shares, bonds, debentures, notes, certificates, mortgages, hypothecs, agreements of sale or similar obligations (hereinafter referred to as "changes in securities") frequently do not fall clearly within the lists of inclusions in, or exclusions from, the meaning of the term "disposition" contained in paragraph 54(c). ![]() If you compare Facebook and Snapchat right now, you can do the same things on Facebook and Instagram that you do on Snapchat: post photos, message friends, send money, read articles, watch celebrities’ videos. ![]() They differ radically in their cultures and customs-what users value and how that plays out in their actions. And Snapchat kept moving up and up, attracting more users and stealing more photos and videos that users formerly posted to Facebook or Instagram.īut that makes it sound like all the social media services are somehow converging or become indistinguishable from one another. For Zuckerberg, Snapchat became the one that got away. When Facebook tried to buy it in 2013, Snapchat founder and CEO Evan Spiegel turned down the offer-reportedly more than $3 billion. But that approach didn’t work with Snapchat. Zuckerberg is hyper-aware of this potentially lethal threat from startups he builds separate teams at Facebook to create new apps and snatches up the best new companies by making aggressive and successful offers for hot startups like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus Rift. Then the entrant gets better (adding more features like video sharing and geofilters) and moves upmarket (adding Snapchat Stories and moving into the social networking), attracting a bigger share of the market (passing Twitter in daily active users) and better customers (older, more affluent users, and celebrities and media companies signing on as publishers). ![]() Which brings us to Snapchat, a company that perfectly embodies the business dynamics Christensen laid out in The Innovator’s Dilemma: a new player in a market makes a product or service that is so far beneath what the big players are offering that it at first seems silly-why would they waste their time down there? Who cares about a sexting app? But the entrant fills a need, as teenagers prefer using an app where the messages disappear after a time. One way to do so might be to create an experiment that simulates a near-death experience while the patient is being monitored under lab conditions. You must post a clear and direct question in the title. What's more, it's not possible to confirm that the patients really had any visions as they did not live to tell the tale.īorjigin hopes in the future to collect data on hundreds more people-increasing the chances that some will actually survive. Owing to the small sample size, the authors cautioned against making wide-ranging inferences. It's not clear why two of the patients experienced these potential signs of "covert consciousness" while two did not, though Borjigin speculated their history of seizures might have primed their brains in some way. "If this part of the brain lights up, that means the patient is seeing something, can hear something, and they might feel sensations out of the body," said Borjigin, adding that the region was "on fire."īrain and heart activity were monitored, second by second, for the last few hours of the patients' life, contributing to the strength of the analysis, she added. The University of Michigan paper went further by examining in greater depth which parts of the brain lit up, with the activity detected in the "posterior cortical hot zone"-comprised of the temporal, parietal and occipital lobes, which are associated with changes in consciousness. When taken off their ventilators, two of the four patients-a 24-year-old woman and a 77-year-old woman-saw increases in their heart rates as well as surges of brain waves in the gamma frequency-the fastest such brain activity, which is associated with consciousness.Įarlier studies-including a prominent paper published in 2022 about an 87-year-old man who died from a fall-have also found spikes in gamma waves in some people near the point of death. The team looked back at the records of four patients who died from cardiac arrest while on electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring.Īll four fell into comas and were removed from life support after it was determined they were beyond medical help. While not the first study of its kind, what sets the new research apart is that it's detailed in a way "that's never been done before," senior author Jimo Borjigin, whose lab is devoted to understanding the neurological basis of consciousness, told AFP. In a new paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science ( PNAS), researchers at the University of Michigan found evidence of surges in brain activity associated with consciousness in two dying patients. The fact that these stories share so many elements in common and come from people from diverse cultural backgrounds points to a possible biological mechanism-one that has yet to be de-mystified by scientists. ![]() ![]() ![]() I replaced the existing 250GB drive with an old 2TB hard drive and also included 240GB SSD I had lying a round, along with the extra 4GB of memory from the Acer computer and I was ready to start playing with the software to get this beast operational.Īs I had done my research before making any purchases, I had found what I needed on the TonyMacX86 website A Complete Ten Step macOS Sierra Guide for the HP 6300 Pro/8300 Elite. My first challenge I discovered, was that the inbuilt graphics of the Intel i5 “Ivy Bridge” family processor in the HP computer would not be good enough and I would have to use a dedicated graphics card or upgrade the processor to an Intel i7. Unlike most computers I have worked on, this was spotlessly clean inside. They were built to commercial specifications with a much better case, a reliable power supply and motherboard designed to be on 24/7.
